Guinea-Bissau is a poor and in many ways less developed country. Two-thirds of the population lives under the poverty line, the country hardly has a functioning government. This naturally also has severe consequences for the quality of education. Schools are not well maintained, if at all. Classes are overcrowded, teachers often not paid, which often leads to strikes. So parents regularly try to set up schools themselves. The need for vocational training is also great. Many youngsters have not learnt skills with which to provide for themselves. Here also there are private intitaitives, such as employers offering traineeships.
